Before the First Word, Only Deep

Genesis 1:1-53 min

At the start of everything, God does not meet a finished world but a dark, shapeless deep. The first act of creation shows that beginnings are not built from blueprints but spoken into being by a God who is already present in the chaos.

Read

Before there was a horizon, there was the deep. Before there was morning, there was a hovering. The Bible opens not with a polished world but with tohu va-vohu — a Hebrew phrase translated as formless and void. It describes a wilderness, a waste, a place where nothing holds its shape. This is where God begins.

Notice what Genesis 1 does not say. It does not say God arrived with a sketchpad. It does not say God surveyed existing materials. The text simply says:

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

-- Genesis 1:1-2

That word hovering — the Hebrew merachefet — is the same verb used later in Deuteronomy to describe an eagle fluttering over its young. Before a single thing is made, God is already tender over the emptiness. The void is not abandoned. It is being brooded over.

Then comes the first recorded speech in all of Scripture. Four words in Hebrew: Yehi or. Vayehi or. "Let there be light. And there was light."

There is no strain in it. No scaffolding. God does not manufacture the light from something else. The light comes because God speaks, and the speaking is enough. What was absent becomes present simply because it is named.

Then God does something easy to miss: God separates. Light from darkness. Day from night. The first creative act is not only bringing something into being but drawing a line, giving things their boundaries, their names, their rhythm. "And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening, and there was morning — the first day."

The text gives us a pattern. Presence in the chaos. A word that calls forth. A separating. A naming. A rhythm of evening and morning, where even the unfinished counts as a whole day.

This is how God begins. Not with a finished product, but with a first word over a deep that does not yet know what it will become.

Pause

Take a slow breath.
Sit with what you've read.

Ponder

  1. What is the formless deep you are standing over right now, and what would it feel like to believe God is already hovering there?

  2. If you could speak only one small word of light into this new beginning today, what would it be?

  3. Where have you been waiting for a full blueprint before taking the first small creative act?

Pray

A prayer

God of the first morning, Maker of light where there was none, hallowed is the name you speak over my emptiness. Let your kingdom come into the formless places of my life, and your will be done in the parts of me that do not yet have shape. Give me this day the courage of a first word. Forgive me for waiting until I could see the whole before I would begin any part. Deliver me from the fear of the deep, and from the lie that your Spirit only shows up once the work is finished. Hover over what I am starting. Separate light from shadow in me. Teach me to call an unfinished day good, and to trust the evening and the morning to you.

Amen.

Begin in the dark. The Spirit is already hovering.
